Shopify help: when the Help Center is enough and when you need a developer

Something in your store is broken and you do not know who to ask? Shopify has no single place that handles everything. Depending on where the problem sits, a different party is responsible. If you know which, you save days of going back and forth. This article sorts the problems I see most often with store owners.

    Four places, four responsibilities

    1. The Shopify Help Center and Shopify Support. Responsible for the platform itself: plan and billing, payments through Shopify Payments, domains, how the admin works, orders, shipping settings. The Help Center has guides for almost every setting. If you want to know where something is in the admin or how a feature is meant to work, this is the right place.

    2. The app maker. A third-party app is supported by its own vendor. If the review app shows stars wrongly or the subscription tool does not create an order, write to the app support first. Every app has a way to contact its maker in the Shopify App Store.

    3. The theme maker. If you have a theme from the Theme Store, its maker can answer questions about its features and settings, for example how a certain section is meant to be used.

    4. A developer. Responsible for everything that is custom in your store: customized theme code, the interplay of several apps, errors after a change, features that do not exist as such. This is usually where what platform support and app makers can do for you ends.

How to tell who is responsible

    Ask yourself two questions:

    • Does it also happen in a fresh store without customizations? If yes, it is the platform or the app. If no, the cause is in your theme or in a customization.
    • Did something change before? A new app, a theme update, a new code snippet: the moment from which something stopped working is often the best clue.

Common problems and where to take them

    • I cannot find a setting / do not understand a feature: Help Center.
    • A payment or payout does not work: Shopify Support.
    • An app shows something wrong or does not create data: app support; if two apps clash, a developer as well.
    • The store suddenly got slow: usually apps or scripts in the theme, see Slow Shopify store? 7 causes.
    • A button, a spacing or a section looks wrong on the phone: check in the theme editor first, otherwise a developer. More in Shopify theme customization.
    • A customization is missing after a theme update: a developer, ideally one who knows the original customization.
    • You are moving from another system to Shopify: a developer, more in Moving from WooCommerce to Shopify.
    • A feature your theme does not have: a developer, when no app covers it cleanly.

    What to give the developer

The more precise the report, the faster the fix. Note down:

    1. Where: the exact page, ideally with its address.
    2. What you expected and what happens instead.
    3. On which device and in which browser.
    4. Since when, and what you changed before.
    5. A screenshot or a short screen recording.

With these five details a bug can often be narrowed down quickly, without anyone having to ask back.

    One-off help or ongoing support?

Some stores only need a quick fix now and then. Others change something all the time: new campaigns, new markets, new features. For those, a fixed technical contact who knows the store is worth it, instead of starting from zero each time.

What ongoing support can look like and how it differs from one-off jobs is described in the article Shopify maintenance and support. One ongoing example from my work is Elanora Skin, since late 2025.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify Support help with code problems in the theme? As a rule, no. Shopify supports the platform, not your custom changes. For that you need a developer.

Do I need someone who speaks German? It helps when the description and follow-up questions work without translation. I work in German and English.

Can I describe a bug myself without being technical? Yes. The five details above are enough. You do not need more technical detail.

Do you work in the live store? No. Changes are made in an unpublished copy of the theme and go live only after your approval.

    Not sure who is responsible?

Send me your store’s address and a sentence or two about the problem for the free store check. I tell you where the problem is and who can fix it, even if that is not me. If it is a case for a developer, you get a fixed-price offer after the briefing, for example for a redesign or theme customization. And if you are still weighing whether a freelancer or an agency fits your plan: Shopify freelancer or agency.
